You can escape the crowds by going on a challenging hike. The castle at the heart of Edinburgh is Scotland's capital. Every summer, it comes alive for its famed comedy festival.

Reduce costs. There are not many things in London that are free. State-run museums and galleries, however, are a notable exception. The Science Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Natural History Museum are all located close together. They are free to visit and housed within notable buildings.
Bath or Bristol. The City of Bristol is located 10 miles from the snooty Bath. It was severely damaged during World War II, and has been further degraded by planners since.
